My Day, Every Day: Simple Present for Daily Routines!

Ready to talk about what you do from morning till night? Let's learn how to use the Simple Present tense for your daily habits!

How We Talk About Routines

The Simple Present tense is super useful for talking about things you do regularly, every day, every week, or every year. Think of your habits and routines!

Forming the Simple Present (It's Easy!)

For most verbs (like "eat," "play," "study"), we use the base form of the verb.

But be careful! For he, she, and it, we need to add an -s or -es to the end of the verb.

  • I / You / We / They wake up early.
  • He / She / It wakes up early.
  • I / You / We / They brush my teeth.
  • He / She / It brushes her teeth.

Tip: If a verb ends in -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -o, we usually add -es for he/she/it.

  • I wash my face. / She washes her face.
  • They go to school. / He goes to school.

Making Routines Negative (What you DON'T do!)

To say you *don't* do something regularly, use do not (don't) or does not (doesn't) before the base verb.

  • I do not (don't) eat breakfast every day.
  • She does not (doesn't) like to wake up early.

Asking About Routines (What do you do?)

To ask questions about daily routines, start your question with Do or Does, then the subject, then the base verb.

  • Do you eat breakfast?
  • Does he walk to school?
  • Do they play sports after school?
